I Heart Corn Nuts…how do they make them?

Well after a little internets ugoogling I found out that Corn Nuts are normally prepared by soaking whole dried corn kernels in water for three days, in the fridge and then deep-frying them in oil until they are hard and brittle. (I’m not gonna lie I thought they were healthy before this discovery…) The kernels are soaked because they shrink during the harvesting and cleaning process, and rehydration returns them to their original size. Also note a dried corn kernel will pop (popcorn…get it) if you place it over heat because the moisture on the inside is expanding. So trying to make corn nuts with dried corn kernels without soaking them…will blow up in your face…literally…Kaboom…ok moving on now…

Type of Cuisine: I don’t know where you can but I buy it at my local fruit market in the nut section or at the local nut shot shop…Freudian slip there…they also have it with a bbq seasoning that reminds me very much of FRITOS, BBQ flavour…mmm so gooooood….probably healthier than the Fritos though…

Where did you have it: I usually enjoy these with a pre-mix I make myself with other nuts, like cashews, toasted peanuts, dried cranberries, sometimes I add almonds or pistachios…it’s a great snack and quite filling…it usually provides the necessary energy I need for a few hours ahead.

How much?: I usually pay $3.99 / lb which is a little expensive yes, but they’re always fresh and relatively speaking they’re not expensive if you’re comparing them to Fritos…and I am definitely comparing them to corn chips…corn chips usually are 280 g which is about 30% less for the same price…how’s that for more bang for your buck! Booya!

Rate it 1 to 10: I’m a big fan of crunchy salty snacks, so this is a winner all the way, a solid 8 out of 10!
