The Grilled Cheese Sandwich: Tried and True
The grilled cheese sandwich is said to have originated sometime during the 1920’s when sliced bread and so-called “American cheese” became widely available. Originally made as an open faced sandwich, the variation with a top slice has became common by the 1960’s. Many versions of the grilled cheese sandwich can now be found on restaurant menus across north America.
My favorite…grilled cheese and bacon baby oh yeah!
Type of Cuisine: It seems to have its origins in north America, even though cheese and bread sandwiches have been known to date back to ancient times.
Where did you have it: Again, this is one of those staple foods where the better question is where DIDN’T you have it?
How much?: Depending on the quality of bread and cheese you use it could be as low as a few cents to as high as you like…it really depends on your budget and your penchant for culinary adventure.
I like to use good bread even if it’s sliced bread, nothing less than 14 grain, bacon and cheese always vary depending on what’s in the fridge…sometimes you have to settle for processed cheese…but the truth is, it’s still delicious
Rate it 1 to 10 : 10 on 10 for me, when you’re hungry and you have only basic ingredients in your cupboard/fridge this is always a satisfying solution!
Also if you’ve got some aged cheddar and thick hand cut bacon from your local butcher shop…well it could become a real delicacy!
Now I just have to give the Elvis Sandwich a try…maybe that’s what I’ll be writing about for my next post…that’s right…the King used to make sandwiches with toasted bread, peanut butter, sliced banana, and fried bacon, sometimes with honey also cooked in a pan or on a griddle, much like the grilled cheese sandwich…mmmmmm sounds delicious….
