Homemade Gnocchi is On My Soul Food List
I use the term “Soul Food” to mean something different that it means in the U.S. For me the definition of Soul food is food that helps settle the soul as well as the stomach. Something about that particular food that makes me feel at home, comfortable, safe… all the things that good food should make you feel…in my opinion anyway, not just comfort food like fatty burgers and pasta and pizza etc…but good old simple, healthy and hearty food.
Type of Cuisine: Italian, some say that the Gnocchi was spun off into dumplings in many other countries…maybe it’s the other way around…who knows.
Gnocchi has been a traditional Italian pasta type of probably Middle Eastern origin since Roman times. The use of potato is a relatively recent innovation, occurring after the introduction of the potato to Europe in the 16th century. Potato gnocchi are particularly popular in Abruzzo, Ciociaria, Frosinone, Latina, Rieti, Roma, Viterbo, etc…
Where did you have it: I first had it at home prepared by my grandmother and now I only have it when I got to Pizzeria Napoletana in my neck of the woods, this is also the only Italian restaurant I frequent and I usually always have this dish and by USUALLY I really mean to say ALWAYS.
How much?: When you make this dish at home it doesn’t take much in the way of expensive ingredients but mostly time and a little effort.
Rate it 1 to 10 : This is one of those things that’s really easy to screw up, so if you can do it well kudos to you, if you can’t well then practice makes perfect…seriously, only experience will help this one along…
This is a 10 for hearty favorites in my long list of favorite dishes.
