The news from Japan is still looking bad, with word today that radiation contamination has been found in a baby formula from a leading brand in Japan.
It’s now less than a year after one of the worst natural and nuclear disasters in that country’s history (I’d argue even in the world’s history, given the relative scarcity of such triple-whammy disasters – nuclear at that). This revelation, obviously, has not done much to calm the public’s fears and the perception that there has been a cover-up regarding the full extent of the damage.
Radiation Contamination of Meiji Baby Formula
The company at fault is called Meiji, which is said to be a major food producer in Japan. They are now in the process of recalling about 400,000 cans of its “Meiji Step” baby formula, which they claim was contaminated during a drying process. The drying process, evidently, used “fresh air” only a few days after the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown that started on March 11.
“There is no problem because the levels are within the government limit,” said health minister Kazuhiko Tsurumi. Even if that’s the case, if you were a Japanese parent, you’d be forgiven for not believing him. We’ll see what else happens with this story.
Meiji, by the way, has about 40 percent of domestic baby formula sales.
