Too Much Salt is Bad….too Little….Also bad!?
Recently a new study has shaken common notions on salt intake.
We all know that too much salt can be bad for us. Recently the American Medical Association (AMA) has also found that too little salt can ALSO have negative effects. It is apparently now viewed that a range for safe salt consumption for consumers is important.
So why is too little salt bad?
The study found that people with heart disease, whose salt intake matched low levels recommended appeared to be at higher risk of death from heart attacks and strokes, moreso than those who consumed more salt.
We all know that…
There is a link between high salt intake and a higher risk of cardiovascular death. The lowest risk is found with moderate salt intake. The lesson here is balance, try to keep a balance of salt intake, like everything else…in moderation…everything is good, in excess…everything is bad.
High consumption of sodium-rich foods is indeed associated with a greater incidence of cardiovascular events like heart attack. What wasn’t expected was that very low sodium intake was actually also associated with a higher risk of these events.
Researchers say that with consumers who have moderate intake, there is emerging uncertainty as to whether there are long-term benefits of reducing sodium intake further.
