Yesterday was Food Day in the U.S.
The idea behind this is similar to Earth Day, in that Food Day wants to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way. To do this, they’ve set out to create foodie-loving events around the country in homes, schools, churches, farmers markets, city halls and state capitals (giving us fat bastards plenty of opportunities to stuff our faces – with healthy food that is).
The honorary co-chairs for Food Day were Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and the main sponsor was the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the nonprofit watchdog group that fights for food labeling, better nutrition, and safer food.
Food Day’s goals are to encourage congress to help:
- Reduce diet-related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods
- Support sustainable farms and limit subsidies to big agribusiness
- Expand access to food and alleviate hunger
- Protect the environment and animals by reforming factory farms
- Promote health by curbing junk-food marketing to kids
- Support fair conditions for food and farm workers
Events included:
- A rally in Savannah, Ga. that celebrated locally grown food
- An anti-soda campaign in New York
- A 50-person meal in Times Square
- Food trucks in Boston promoting healthier foods
- And much more
I’m not sure how effective this sort of thing will be, but it’s a nice idea. Let’s hope it catches on.
