The Smart Lid, a disposable color-changing coffee lid (it’s sort of like a mood ring, only with caffeine), has won the Occupational Health & Safety 2011 New Product of the Year Award for the “food safety” category.
Occupational Health & Safety Magazine, by the way, is “the world’s largest journal of its kind, with a monthly circulation of over 80,000″. By that same measure, I’m the most handsome, Italian-Canadian, brown-haired, 5’11 man living in Montreal with crohn’s disease, two beauty marks on the right side of my face and short-sightedness.
The Smart Lid won this award by being the only hot beverage packaging to offer a visual indication of the contents. Like a horny teenager, it changes from a dark color to bright red with the some heat. It also tells you if the lid is securely attached to the cup (meaning you can’t purposely scald yourself and then sue a coffee chain).
