Nondescript Building Houses a Working Vertical Farm in South Korea
The idea of vertical farming in a modern urban context first surfaced about 10 years ago. Then, it was just a dream. But over the past two years, the first prototypes have been developed.
We don’t often wonder why we have learned how to take care of ourselves and protect ourselves from the elements, but still leave our plants carelessly outside where we can’t do much more than hope for good weather.
Vertical farms aim to change all that, creating ideal growing conditions and avoiding waste nothing.
Vertical Farm Advantages:
- Year round production
- no weather related crop failures
- no agricultural runoff
- allowance for ecosystem restoration
- no use of pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers
- use of 70-95 % less water
- greatly reduced food miles
- more control of food safety and security
- new employment opportunities
- purification of grey water to drinking water
- animal feed from postharvest plant material
