Goodbye Food Pyramid, Hello My Plate

Sharing is Caring...

The American food pyramid has been replaced with a simple plate (seen above). The goal of the new graphic is to encourage Americans to eat a more plant-based diet and to adopt healthier eating habits. For this reason, it’s very simplistic (some are saying even too simplistic – Check out CNN for a history of US Food Guides).

According to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, “It’s an opportunity for Americans to understand quickly how to have a balanced and nutritious meal. It’s a constant reminder as you look at your own plate whether your portion sizes are right, whether you’ve got enough fruits and vegetables on that plate.”

Vilsack unveiled the new plate graphic with first lady Michelle Obama and Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin last week.
