Cinnamon Toast
History:
Cinnamon toast was a popular dish of the 17th century, which at that time was made by covering the toast with a paste of cinnamon and sugar, and then moistened with wine. This stayed popular with the early North American settlers, and eventually became a traditional American dish.
Why it’s awesome:
It’s sort of like the more famous French toast, but lighter, sweeter, and very easy to pair with a variety of meats and fruits. Plus, it’s an easy way to spice up regular bread.
Ingredients:
- Bread of choice
- Butter
- Sugar for sprinkling or a little honey (I’ve always just done this to taste, so start conservatively and go from there to find your level of sweetness)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon for every two slices used
Servings:
Totally up to you as the recipe can easily be adapted to more or less slices of bread.
Directions:
- Using a broiler or toaster oven, toast the bread lightly on one side.
- Turn it over/spread butter and honey (or sprinkle with sugar).
- Top with cinnamon
- Return to broiler and toast until cinnamon and honey/sugar melt together and everything is golden brown.
- Serve immediately.
Nutritional Benefits:
In moderation, cinnamon has been found to lower LDL cholesterol, regulate blood sugar, stop medication-resistant yeast infections, and reduce some forms of cancer cells. It’s considered especially beneficial for people with Type 2 Diabetes.
